SUMMARY:The Bias We Don't See: Hidden Assumptions in Learning Design
DESCRIPTION:We like to think our learning designs are objective\, fair\, and grounded in evidence.\nHowever\, if we look closely and with fresh eyes\, we might see that bias appears in our work – even when we don’t intend it to. \n \nHere’s the tricky bit: we all operate from mental frameworks shaped by our own experiences\, and those frameworks inevitably influence how we approach learning design. The research you prioritize\, the examples that feel “obviously” relevant\, the way you interpret feedback – all of it gets filtered through your particular lens on the world. This isn’t malicious or careless; it’s simply how human cognition works. \nThe challenge is that these mental patterns\, while helping you work efficiently\, can also create gaps between what you think you’re designing and what learners actually experience. Your particular perspective on how people learn\, what motivates them\, and what “effective” training looks like becomes the default template for your programs. When that template doesn’t match the reality of your learners\, it can limit learning outcomes and exclude perspectives in ways you never intended. \nThat’s why this Coffee Chat is all about “The Bias We Don’t See: Hidden Assumptions in Learning Design.” \nThis isn’t about achieving perfect objectivity or feeling bad about being human. It’s about developing the awareness to recognize these patterns before they become embedded in your programs. We’ll discuss which assumptions show up most frequently in learning design and exchange practical approaches for spotting them in your own work. The conversation will focus on expanding perspectives\, gathering more representative feedback\, and designing with greater awareness of our blind spots. \nWhat you can expect: \n\nCommon Blind Spots: Discussion of hidden assumptions that frequently surface in learning design and how they show up in our work\nSpotting Your Patterns: Sharing techniques for recognizing the beliefs and frameworks that influence your design decisions\nBroadening Perspectives: Exchanging strategies for gathering input from diverse viewpoints and expanding beyond your own experience\nCreating Accountability: Building practices into your workflow that help catch assumptions before they limit your programs\n\n  \n\n  \n👉 Register now to join us.  \nCan’t Make It In Person? SUMMARY:Injecting Curiosity into Learning Design
DESCRIPTION:What if the missing piece in your learning program isn’t more content – it’s more curiosity?\n  \nYou know that moment when you’re facilitating a session and instead of the usual glazed eyes and phone-checking\, your participants are leaning forward\, asking follow-up questions\, and connecting concepts to their own work? That’s what happens when you design for curiosity instead of just completion. \nIf you’re like most L&D professionals\, you’ve found yourself trapped in a cycle of information delivery; cramming content into modules\, racing through objectives\, and measuring success by completion rates. You know something’s missing\, but it’s not more content or fancier technology. It’s the fundamental human drive to explore and discover. \nWhen you design learning without curiosity\, you create experiences that feel like obligations rather than opportunities. Your learners become passive recipients instead of active explorers\, and the transformative potential of learning gets buried under compliance requirements and checkbox thinking. You’re not alone in this struggle – it’s a challenge facing L&D professionals at every level. \n  \n \n  \nThat’s why this week’s Coffee Chat is all about “Sparking Wonder: Injecting Curiosity into Your Learning Design.” \nThis week\, our Coffee Chat community discusses the secret behind those training sessions where participants actually beg for more time. You know the ones—where learners are scribbling notes\, asking follow-up questions\, and connecting dots you never expected them to see. \nWhat separates these magnetic learning experiences from standard training where engagement feels polite but not passionate? \nYou’ll uncover the specific design techniques that transform reluctant participants into engaged explorers and discover why curiosity might be the most underutilized tool in your L&D toolkit. \n  \n👉 Register now to join us.  \nCan’t Make It In Person? No Worries\, We’ve Got Your Back! SUMMARY:Burnout Recovery: Rest as Strategy\, Not Surrender
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about the thing we all feel but rarely say out loud: burnout.\nIn a profession where we’re constantly expected to be creative\, strategic\, and emotionally tuned in\, exhaustion often hides in plain sight. And if we don’t make space to acknowledge it\, burnout becomes just another part of the job instead of a signal to pause and reset. \nThis Coffee Chat is that space. \nWe’re taking time to talk honestly about what burnout looks like in our professional and personal lives – and how we can begin recovering in ways that work for real people with real responsibilities. \nWe’re joined by special guest Chris Coladonato\, The Connection Catalyst\, who brings a fresh\, grounded perspective on well-being at work and the power of intentional rest as a strategy\, not a reward. \n \nThis isn’t a fix-it session. It’s a reflection session.\nTogether\, we’ll explore: \n\n\nHow burnout shows up specifically in L&D roles \n\n\nThe myths we believe about productivity\, energy\, and “being the go-to” \n\n\nHow to start noticing the signs – before the burnout spiral hits \n\n\nStrategic rest and recovery practices that actually work \n\n\n  \n“Rest helps you show up differently—calmer\, clearer\, more connected. It’s not a sign of weakness… Rest isn’t lazy—it’s strategic.”— Chris Coladonato\, The Connection Catalyst \nThis is your invitation to step away from the noise and connect with others who understand the unique pressures of learning and development work. We’re gathering not to solve burnout in one hour – but to talk honestly about what it looks like\, how it affects us\, and what recovery can truly mean. \nYou’re welcome to participate or just listen in. Bring your coffee\, your questions\, or simply your presence. This conversation is free\, open\, and judgment-free\, because sometimes just showing up is the first step toward feeling whole again. \n👉 Register now to join us. Let’s make space for recovery – together. \nCan’t Make It In Person? No Worries\, We’ve Got Your Back! SUMMARY:Being a Workplace Anthropologist: Finding the Stories That Shape Learning
DESCRIPTION:Being a Workplace Anthropologist: Finding the Stories That Shape Learning\nLet’s be real—sometimes the root of a performance issue isn’t in the data\, the survey\, or the SME interview. It’s in the culture. It’s in the unwritten rules\, the watercooler conversations\, the “that’s just how we do it” mindset. \nIn this Coffee Chat\, we’ll dig into what it looks like to step into the role of a Workplace Anthropologist\, someone who doesn’t just build learning programs but uncovers the stories\, rituals\, and behaviors that shape how people actually work. \nBecause if we want learning to stick\, we have to go deeper than bullet points and surface-level analysis. We have to understand the environment in which it’s meant to live. \n \nWe’ll talk about:\n\n\nHow to read between the lines and spot patterns in behavior and language \n\n\nThe power of story in identifying barriers to learning \n\n\nWhat L&D can learn from curiosity-driven observation \n\n\nHow to use what you discover to build training that fits the real world\, not the ideal one \n\n\nThis isn’t about becoming a fly on the wall—it’s about becoming a better partner. Because when you really understand the environment you’re designing for\, your learning solutions don’t just land…they stick. \nAnd yep—this session is 100% free. Bring your curiosity\, your stories\, and your questions. \n👉 Register now to save your seat and see your workplace with new eyes. \n\nCan’t Make It In Person? No Worries\, We’ve Got Your Back! SUMMARY:Writing for Learning: Cut the Fluff\, Keep the Impact
DESCRIPTION:Let’s be honest—most learning content is too long\, too dry\, and too forgettable. And you know what’s often to blame? The writing. We’ve taken the “human” out of writing! \nWhether you’re crafting slides\, job aids\, emails\, or eLearning scripts\, your words matter. They set the tone\, create connection\, and either drive real behavior change—or make people check out before they finish the first sentence. \nThat’s why this Coffee Chat is all about sharpening our writing chops. Not to be the next Hemingway\, but to create content that’s clear\, intentional\, and actually helps people learn. \nWe’ll Talk About:\n\n\nHow to write with a learner-first lens (and what that even means) \n\n\nWhere common L&D writing goes off the rails \n\n\nSimple ways to be more human\, less robotic in your content \n\n\nReal examples from the group—we’ll break ‘em down\, rebuild\, and laugh a little too \n\n\nThis Coffee Chat is totally free and wide open—no gatekeeping here. Whether you’re new to writing for learning or have battle scars from years of getting terrible text from SME’s\, you’ll walk away with fresh ideas and a few writing wins you can apply right away. \n👉 Register now and save your spot—because better learning starts with better words. \nCan’t Make It In Person? SUMMARY:Out of the Shadows: Increasing L&D Visibility

SUMMARY:Productivity Tools That Work For You
DESCRIPTION:Stop Juggling Flaming Chainsaws\, Start Heathy Productivity Habits\n \n  \nDo you ever feel like you’re juggling flaming chainsaws while blindfolded on a unicycle? (Okay\, maybe not that dramatic\, but let’s be honest\, work life can be pretty intense.) Between designing workshops\, crafting engaging training materials\, and nurturing employee development\, finding time to breathe\, let alone be productive\, feels like a pipe dream. \nHere’s the truth: the latest productivity tool du jour\, with its flashy interface and promises of “ultimate efficiency\,” won’t magically solve your time woes. In fact\, getting caught up in the “shiny object syndrome” can be a productivity trap itself.  \nRemember Franklin Planners? I do\, and I was all in\, relying on mine to keep my tasks and commitments in line. I didn’t go anywhere without it. So\, when it came to incorporating digital tools\, I was hesitant to make the leap because there were so many options. Where does one start? \nYet\, embracing these tech solutions eventually turbocharged my productivity levels. \nTherefore\, in this coffee chat\, let’s dive into what really matters when choosing productivity tools. Let’s shift the mindset away from the “more tools\, more productivity” myth and help identify the specific areas slowing you down in your unique workflow and what tools and processes have worked to make your work life healthier and more efficient.  \nLet’s focus on what works for you.  \nOur chat will focus on: \n\nProductivity mindset and workflow. What’s working\, what’s not.\nTools that make life easier. What are our favorite tools that streamline our activities?\nCautionary tales: “Well\, that didn’t work the way I thought…”\n\n  \nCan’t Make It In Person? No Worries\, We’ve Got Your Back! SUMMARY:Building a Habit of Continuous Learning
DESCRIPTION:“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” — Brian Herbert\n \nWhat if the biggest barrier to your growth isn’t a lack of time or resources—but the habit of putting learning last?\nLearning isn’t just about attending training sessions or collecting certifications—it’s about building a habit of curiosity and growth that fits into your daily rhythm. \nIt’s also not about making massive changes overnight—it’s about small\, consistent actions that build momentum over time. The key is to start where you are\, with what you have\, and keep going. \nIn our recent Learning Rebels Coffee Chat\, you all shared books\, podcasts\, tools\, and other learning resources that have helped you grow. This conversation underscored a crucial point: learning isn’t just about what we consume—it’s about what we share\, how we apply knowledge\, and how we create space in our routines for continued development. \nBut as learning professionals\, we are well versed in understanding the “why” behind continuous learning. The BIG question is “how.” \n\nHow do I make time?\nHow do I start?\nHow do I make it a habit?\nHow do I capture and curate notes?\n\nThe list of “How” is long and\, perhaps\, intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be. \nWant to make learning a habit that sticks? Join us this Friday for a Learning Rebels Coffee Chat on building a habit of continuous learning. We’ll share strategies\, challenges\, and real-world tips to make learning an everyday practice. \n

SUMMARY:Shedding SMART Goals
DESCRIPTION:As we kick off the new year\, it’s common for many of us to think about setting new goals\, both in our personal and professional lives. \nHowever\, there’s a catch. Typically\, when we make New Year’s resolutions\, only about 10% of us manage to stick with them for more than a few months. This happens quite often\, and I think it’s because we approach goal-setting by focusing on goal-setting through a negative filter. Let’s shift our perspective and tackle this year’s goals with a fresh\, more effective\, more positive mindset. \n“I must get better at…” \n\nNot procrastinating.\nLosing weight.\nGetting organized.\nCommunicating better.\nCreating courses that don’t fail.\n\nWhat these statements all have in common is the negative filter we see them through. If they aren’t achieved\, it’s a failure. \nWouldn’t it be better to put a more positive spin on goals? Perhaps treating them as “positive and purposeful intentions“? \nWe can do this in several ways: \n\nWrite them as positive statements. Instead of\, “I must lose weight\,” why not “Spend 5 minutes a day stretching.” This is doable. We’re taking a large\, negatively filtered goal and chucking it down to more positive action.\nInstead of “get organized\,” try “keep the area around my keyboard tidy.” Again\, doable. We tend to beat ourselves up when we fail to do something. However\, the goal becomes more digestible when looking through a positive filter and starting small.\n\nIt’s the difference between setting ourselves up for failure and creating positive and purposeful intentions. \nConsider SMART goals\, a format that businesses commonly accept as best practice. But SMART goals don’t bring about results. In a large-scale study published in December of 2020\, participants who were taught how to use SMART goals reported less success with their New Year’s Resolutions than a comparison group. \nBut it’s really not that surprising – let’s take SMART goals and analyze just two criteria: “Achievable and Realistic.” Those two pieces are redundant\, which is why many people have changed “Realistic” to “Relatable or Relevant.” But it still doesn’t make sense – 1) Because if something is to be achievable\, it stands to reason that the goal should be realistic/relatable/relevant. And 2) It fails because “Achievable and Realistic” are not enablers of strong action and\, dare I say\, actually encourage the status quo. \nSo\, let’s gather and rethink how we are going to tackle the year. Together\, let’s build something actionable and positive that stands a chance of success. \nCan’t be there live? We’ve got your back!  \nSimply by registering to attend the coffee chat\, you will receive the following: \n✅ Follow-up email with resources and extra goodies \n✅ Copy of the video recording \n✅ Copy of the chatbox transcription \n✅ Copy of the full session transcript
