Not too long ago Rick Blunt reached out to me to ask if I would mind conducting a webinar for his Washington DC ASTD Chapter, on using Social Media Tools for Learning.
My first response, of course! My second, what is your goal? Social media, and the tools surrounding it, are many and have many purposes. It is easy to understand how people become confused and even intimidated by the idea of social media and then you try to figure out how you are supposed to use these tools in learning today? Too much to think about, give me my flip chart and smelly markers and I’ll get back to doing the research…someday…
Rick’s learning goals were simple.
Help the membership understand a few of the more common social media tools, and give some examples of learning applications. Give them something to think about, and provide them with a few choices that they may be able to apply on the job – maybe not today but tomorrow. The goal is not to make them subject matter experts, but to help them to see that social media when used for learning with a clear objective in mind, can elevate the engagement and interactivity – leading to a deeper exchange of knowledge. Using social media is not scary, and virus zombies will not pop out of Facebook and eat your face. (Okay – that last bit was mine)
Wow, all this in an hour? Challenge accepted. So on July 16th, Noon EST, I will be hosting a Social Media Tools for Learning, Boot Camp and I hope you will join me there. If you are a member of ASTD the webinar is open to you. You are a member of the DC chapter? Wonderful, the webinar is free! If not, that’s okay, just a mere $25 bucks and you get some insider tips from a Learning Rebel as to how to use some of the many tools out there. All proceeds go the DC Chapter of ASTD.
That’s right you read correctly – any extra proceeds go to the chapter, why? Because, it’s good to give back. Personally I am a Chicagoland ASTD Chapter member, but ASTD is my link to some wonderful people doing equally wonderful work and I’m happy to share an hour of my time. That’s what Rebels do.
But wait there’s more!
